963933_mapim_beach.jpgTown officials on Dauphin Island was to buy property on the undeveloped west end to establish a public beach a boost tourism. The cost? An estimated $1.75 million.

The island, cut in half by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and left a gash in the undeveloped portion that has grown into a mile-wide breach. The town must wait until all necessary permits are received until moving forward with the project.
